Over the last few years we are experiencing a proliferation of Mixed Lines in the High Voltage transmission system as a result of the growth of the urban areas and environmental and visual impact considerations. These Mixed Lines, which combine both overhead and underground sections, represent a problem for the system operators when configuring the protection functions.

The faults on the overhead line section are mainly temporary so the auto-reclosing routine clears the fault and restores the availability of the system. However, faults on underground cable sections are mainly permanent and the auto-reclosing sequence is not recommended as the damage caused by the fault can be worsened. Conventional protection configurations for mixed lines are not 100% reliable or involve a very high cost in installation and equipment.

During this webinar we will explore a solution based on optical passive transformers that can discriminate with 100% reliability if the fault occurs in the underground cable to block the auto-reclosing.
